How Long Does a Smile Makeover with Veneers or Crowns Actually Take?
Two appointments. That’s the short answer. And I get this question a lot. Patients come in thinking a smile makeover with porcelain veneers or ceramic crowns is this long, drawn-out process that’s going to take months. And it’s not. It’s two visits. About two weeks from start to finish. That’s it.

“If you’re looking for this kind of result using ceramic or porcelain crowns or veneers, a very common question that I get is how long is this going to take? Is this going to be a long process? And it’s not a long one. It’s actually two steps or two appointments. One appointment is for the preparation of any preparations we need to do to your teeth and the delivery of a temporary version of what we want the final to look like. And then about a two-week turnaround that I need time in my lab to mill the ceramic or porcelain crowns or veneers, to glaze them, to do everything I need to do, the finishing, so that they look very lifelike before you come in and we do the final cementation or bonding of those ceramic or porcelain veneers or crowns to your teeth. So it’s a two appointment, two-step, about a two-week turnaround from start to finish. And that’s it.”
What Happens at the First Appointment
So the first visit is when we do the preparation work. And what does that mean exactly?
If we’re placing veneers, we’re preparing the front surface of the teeth. Light preparation. Just enough to make room for the veneer to bond properly and look natural. Not a lot of tooth structure. Very conservative.
If we’re doing crowns, the preparation is a little more involved. We’re shaping the tooth so the crown can fit over it and restore full function and appearance. But even then, we’re only removing what’s necessary.
After the preparation, we take digital impressions. Precise scans of the teeth. And then we place temporaries. Those are the temporary version of what the final result is going to look like.
And that’s important. Because you’re not walking out without teeth. You leave with a temporary smile that gives you a preview of where we’re headed. You can see the shape, the color, the proportions. And if something needs adjusting, we can talk about it before the finals are made.
Why the Two-Week Turnaround Matters
So why two weeks? What’s happening during that time?
That’s when I’m in the lab. Designing and fabricating your crowns or veneers. And because we have an on-site lab here at our Tampa Bay practice, I’m the one doing that work. Not sending it out to some commercial lab across the country.
I’m milling the ceramic or porcelain. Checking the fit. Refining the contour. Glazing the surface so it has that natural translucency that real enamel has. Making sure everything looks lifelike before you come back in.
That level of control is what allows us to get results that look natural. That blend seamlessly with your smile. Because I’m not just designing the case. I’m fabricating it. And if something needs to be tweaked, I can do that in real time.
What Happens at the Second Appointment
Second visit is when we bond everything in place. The final cementation. Or bonding, depending on whether we’re doing crowns or veneers.
We remove the temporaries. Clean the teeth. Try in the final restorations to make sure the fit, color, and contour are exactly what we want. And if any minor adjustments are needed, we handle them right then.
Once everything looks perfect, we bond them permanently. And the transformation is immediate. You walk out with your final smile. No waiting. No third appointment.
That’s it. Two visits. Two weeks. Done.
Why This Is Faster Than Most Practices
Now, I’ll be honest. Not every dental office can do this in two weeks. A lot of practices take four to six weeks. Sometimes longer.
And that’s usually because they’re sending the work out to a lab. Shipping impressions. Waiting for the lab to fit the case into their schedule. Shipping the restorations back. If something’s off, shipping it back again for a remake.
That adds time. And every extra step is another opportunity for miscommunication or delay.
Because we have our lab on-site here in Riverview, we eliminate all of that. I control the timeline. I control the quality. And that means we can get you from start to finish in about two weeks without compromising the result.
Smile Makeover with Porcelain Veneers: What to Expect
So let’s talk specifically about veneers for a second. Because the process is slightly different than crowns.
Porcelain veneers are thinner. More conservative. We’re only working with the front surface of the tooth. So the preparation is minimal. And the final result, when done right, looks incredibly natural.
The two-appointment process is the same. Prepare the teeth. Place temporaries. Two weeks later, bond the final veneers. But because veneers are so thin and delicate, the precision matters even more. The fit has to be exact. The color has to match perfectly. The translucency at the edges has to mimic natural enamel.
That’s why having control over the fabrication process matters so much. When I’m milling the veneers in our lab, I can check every detail. Make sure everything is exactly right before the final appointment.
Ceramic Crowns: Same Timeline, Different Purpose
Crowns are a different situation. They’re used when the tooth needs more than just cosmetic improvement. When there’s significant damage, decay, or structural compromise.
But the timeline is the same. Two appointments. Two weeks.
First visit, we prepare the tooth. Take digital impressions. Place a temporary crown. You leave with something that looks and functions like a real tooth while we fabricate the permanent one.
Two weeks later, we bond the final crown in place. And because it’s made from ceramic or porcelain, it looks just like a natural tooth. Matches the color and translucency of your other teeth. Feels like a real tooth when you bite down.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I’ve been quoted six weeks at another dental office for veneers. Why does your process only take two weeks?
The main reason is the on-site lab. Most dental offices send their cases to an outside commercial lab. That lab might be across the state or even out of state. There’s shipping time. The lab has a backlog of cases from multiple offices. Then there’s shipping back. If something’s off and needs a remake, you’re looking at another few weeks. We eliminate all of that by doing the work in-house. I mill and fabricate the veneers or crowns right here in our Riverview lab. That cuts the turnaround time significantly. And because I’m the one designing and making them, the communication loop is immediate. No delays. No miscommunication. Two weeks, consistently.
Q: Will I have to go without teeth during the two weeks between appointments?
No. Never. At the first appointment, after we prepare your teeth, we place temporaries. Those are temporary crowns or veneers that you wear while we’re fabricating your permanent ones. They’re designed to look good and function well enough that you can go about your normal life. Eat, speak, smile. You’re not walking around with gaps or exposed teeth. The temporaries give you a preview of what the final result will look like. And if you want any adjustments to the shape or color before we make the finals, that’s the time to tell me.
What the Full Process Looks Like from Consultation to Final Smile
So let’s walk through the whole thing. Start to finish.
First, you come in for a consultation. We talk about what’s bothering you. What you want to change. What your goals are. I evaluate your teeth. Take photos. Maybe some x-rays. And then I give you an honest assessment of what’s possible and what approach makes the most sense.
If porcelain veneers or ceramic crowns are the right solution, we schedule the first appointment. That’s when we do the preparation work and place the temporaries. That visit usually takes a couple of hours, depending on how many teeth we’re doing.
Then you go home. Live with the temporaries for two weeks. See how they feel. How they look. If anything feels off, you let me know.
Two weeks later, you come back. We remove the temporaries. Bond the final restorations in place. And you walk out with your completed smile. That second appointment usually takes about an hour or so.
That’s it. Three total visits if you count the consultation. Two treatment visits. Two weeks between them. And you’re done.
Is a Two-Week Smile Makeover Right for You?
If you’ve been putting off cosmetic dentistry because you thought it would take too long, this might change your perspective. Two appointments. Two weeks. That’s all it takes to go from where you are now to the smile you’ve been wanting.
Whether you need porcelain veneers, ceramic crowns, or a combination, we handle it the same way. Efficiently. Precisely. With results that look natural and last.
If you’re in Riverview, St. Petersburg, or anywhere in the Tampa Bay area and you’re looking for a smile makeover dentist who can get you there without dragging it out, come in and let’s talk about what’s possible.
